PR’s New Job is Getting Your Brand Cited by AI

Remember when the whole goal of PR was landing the right story in the right outlet? A glowing feature, a quote from your founder, maybe a backlink if the publication was feeling generous.

That still matters. But you’re also writing for a new reader now. One that doesn’t scroll or sleep, and increasingly sits between your brand and your customer before a human ever does.

It’s AI.

When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI for a recommendation, they often don’t get ten blue links anymore. They get an answer. A short, confident summary built from a small handful of sources AI has decided to trust. If your brand is one of those sources, you’re in the conversation. If it is not, you may as well not exist for that search.

Here’s the part that belongs squarely on the PR team’s desk: AI doesn’t pick those sources at random. It picks them based on signals PR has quietly shaped all along.

At a glance, here’s what we’ll explore:

  • How AI search changed who PR is actually writing for
  • How AI decides which brands to cite and which to ignore
  • Why earned media and brand mentions are now discoverability fuel
  • The role reviews and reputation play in AI answers
  • Where PR ends and SEO begins (and why they can’t work in silos)
  • What to do this quarter to become a source AI trusts

The New Reader in the Room

For years, the finish line in search was page one. Rank high, get the click, win the customer.

That finish line moved. By early 2026, AI Overviews were appearing on roughly 48% of tracked Google searches, up from about 31% a year earlier, according to BrightEdge data. Measurements vary by method, but the direction is clear. When an AI answer shows up, the person often gets what they came for right on the results page and never visits a single website. No click, no visit, no traditional “win,” even when you technically ranked.

So, the goal is no longer just to be on the page. It’s to be in the answer. And getting into the answer is less about gaming an algorithm and more about something PR has always done: earning enough trust, in enough credible places, that you become the obvious name to mention.

How AI Decides Who to Trust

Here’s the reassuring part. What makes a brand credible to a machine looks a lot like what makes a brand credible to a person.

AI engines build their answers from sources they consider trustworthy, and they lean on a surprisingly small set of them. According to a June 2026 analysis from New Engen, creator and user-generated content has become one of the strongest signals these engines use to judge which brands are credible.

You can even see the tilt in the data: one 2026 study found that Google’s AI Overviews cite Reddit and YouTube more than any other sources, around 21% and 19% of citations respectively, a clear preference for content made by real people over polished brand messaging. In other words, AI is reading the same trust cues your audience reads. It is just doing it at scale and at speed.

What AI is looking for:

  • Consistent information about your brand everywhere it appears
  • Mentions in credible, relevant publications and platforms
  • Real people talking about you, in reviews, forums, and creator content
  • Clear, well-structured information that is easy to understand

Notice what is not on that list: clever tricks, keyword stuffing, or a bigger ad budget. The currency here is trust, and trust is exactly what PR is built to create.

Earned Media Is Now Discoverability Fuel

The backlink used to be the prize. Now the mention itself, linked or not, is doing real work.

When your brand shows up in a respected article, an industry roundup, a podcast, or a trusted creator’s video, you’re not just collecting attention for the day. You’re teaching AI that credible sources connect your name to your category. Do that enough times, in enough trusted places, and you become a name AI reaches for when someone asks.

What this means for your PR strategy:

  • A feature in a trusted outlet adds to the credible footprint these tools read, not just a clip for the highlight reel
  • Unlinked brand mentions still build your reputation in the eyes of these tools
  • Getting quoted as an expert positions you, literally, as a source

This is also why the money is moving. The IAB projects creator content ad spending will reach $44 billion in 2026, up from $37 billion the year before (reported by New Engen). Brands aren’t paying those prices for reach alone. They’re paying for trusted human voices, the kind that both audiences and AI engines treat as credible.

Reviews and Reputation Are Raw Material

If earned media is the headline, reviews and community conversation are the fine print AI reads very closely.

Research routinely finds that roughly 92% of consumers trust word of mouth and real customer reviews more than traditional brand advertising (National University). AI knows this, so it weighs that same chatter when it decides who to recommend. Your reputation is no longer just social proof for humans. It is training data for the tools your future customers are already asking.

A few things that matter more than they used to:

  • Keep your reviews current, and respond to them, the good and the bad
  • Encourage real customer stories instead of relying on brand claims
  • Monitor what is being said about you across platforms, not just on your own pages
  • Address criticism in the open, because how you handle it is part of the record now

Where PR Ends and SEO Begins

Here’s where teams get tripped up. This isn’t a turf war between PR and SEO. It’s a relay race.

PR earns the trust, the mentions, and the third-party validation that tell AI you’re credible. SEO makes sure your own site is structured so the machine can read and understand you. One without the other leaves points on the table.

The most trusted brands are the ones whose owned content and earned coverage tell the same story, in the same voice, everywhere a person or a machine might look. Consistency isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s the signal. If your press says one thing, your website says another, and your social sounds like a third company entirely, you’re not just confusing customers. You’re confusing the algorithm that decides whether to vouch for you.

What to Do This Quarter

You don’t need to overhaul everything. You need to start sending clearer signals. Here’s a practical order of operations:

  1. Audit what AI already says about you. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI about your brand and your category. See whether you’re mentioned at all, and notice who is.
  2. Tighten your message so it is consistent everywhere. Make sure your positioning, your key facts, and your voice match across your site, your press, and your social.
  3. Go earn mentions where your category lives. Pitch the right outlets, offer real expert commentary, and build relationships with trusted creators in your space.
  4. Treat reviews as a channel, not an afterthought. Ask for them, respond to them, and learn from them.
  5. Loop in your SEO team. Hand off the technical side so your site is clean, structured, and easy for machines to parse.
  6. Measure mentions and citations, not just reach. Track whether you’re showing up in AI answers over time, because that is the new shelf space.

Looking Ahead

AI isn’t going to stop being the middleman. If anything, more of your customers’ first impressions will be formed inside an answer box before they ever meet your brand on your own terms.

That is good news for anyone who does PR well. The brands that win the AI era will not be the ones who found a loophole. They will be the ones who built a real, consistent, trustworthy presence across the places that matter, which is the work PR has been doing all along.

The job didn’t change. The audience just gained a powerful new member.

Get Your Brand in the Answer

Becoming a source AI trusts takes the same things great PR always has: consistency, credibility, and a presence in the right places, now aligned to how both people and machines decide who to believe.

At Epic Notion, we help brands build that presence, connecting earned media, reputation, and social into one trustworthy story that holds up whether a person or an AI is doing the asking.
