Oscars Prioritize Digital & You Should Too

It was announced in December that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences officially signed a multi-year deal that will give YouTube the exclusive global rights to the Oscars®, beginning in 2029 with the 101st Oscars ceremony. If an organization so rooted in tradition and “the old ways” can embrace the digital age, can’t your business too?
I’m Sorry, The Oscars…?
Let’s back up. The 98th Academy Awards, colloquially known as the Oscars, will take place on Sunday, March 15th. It features several intriguing storylines for cinephiles and casual viewers alike. Sinners, the Ryan Coogler-helmed historical vampire film, is breaking barriers around horror while also breaking records. Michael B. Jordan is a Best Actor nominee for his performance, which is just one of the record-setting 16 nominations for the film.
Netflix’s phenomenon, KPop Demon Hunters, is also set to bring home a statue with a win in the Best Original Song category for the mega-smash “Golden.”
All this to say, March 15th should be a fun night!
How Are Movies Relevant to Digital Marketing?
What does any of this have to do with telling the story of your business in today’s world? More than you might think!
After years of being labeled as “stuck in the past,” the Oscars have made sweeping changes to boost relevancy. Adding more films to categories, nominating movies that a normal viewer may have actually seen, and now, embracing the digital age by partnering with YouTube for their broadcast.
This resonated with me as relevant to many businesses in Charlotte and across the Carolinas. While the world continues to evolve, so must our tactics around garnering business.
Similar to the Academy, businesses are always working to attract more customers. Instead of nominating more relevant movies, maybe a business changes some offerings, or, as opposed to adding more films to categories, a business may add more services – all in the goal to have more consumers.
But is that business embracing digital? Are they telling their audience in an effective way about all the work they’ve done to improve their product? That’s where Epic Notion can make a difference.
What Does This Mean For My Business?
For the sake of this article, let’s keep the belabored analogy going.
As the Oscars reinvent themselves to resonate with a more “plugged-in” audience, are they completely abandoning their values or their respect for the art of cinema, or getting rid of everything that made them such a beacon of success in the industry? No!
Neither should you.
Taking digital marketing seriously doesn’t mean you should abandon the current marketing that is working or has worked in the past. It just means leveraging the work that is already being done – in a new way. Billboards, pamphlets, brochures, radio ads, and more still have a place and still have an audience. But, so does Search Engine Optimization, Website Development, Social Media, and Public Relations.
My advice? On Sunday, watch Marty Supreme, Sinners, and One Battle After Another vie for Best Picture. Then, on Monday morning, pop some popcorn and think about how digital marketing can take your brand to record-breaking box office levels.
